Protecting America's National Forests, a report by the Heritage Forests Campaign

Roadless Recreation Week

Each summer, millions of Americans turn to our national forests for camping, hiking or much-needed quiet and shade. Many make their way to places in the backcountry – specifically roadless areas – that provide some of America's most pristine outdoor playgrounds.

Thanks to the protections of the roadless rule, the American public celebrated these places by participating in Roadless Recreation Week, from August 7th to 15th. Sporting and conservation groups around the country encouraged folks to enjoy their favorite outdoor activity in these wild backcountry areas.

Roadless Support

Governors Ted Kulongoski of Oregon, Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Chris Gregoire of Washington are issuing proclamations this week to “recognize the recreational, environmental and economic values” roadless areas provide. These documents call the national roadless rule “one of the most popular federal policies ever developed.”
