Heritage Forests Campaign News Release

May 5, 2003

The Bush Administration’s Forest Policy is Pulp Fiction

Remember those hard-boiled detective stories of the 1920’s full of shady characters, deception and greed? Well you don’t have to rifle through old bookstores to find a classic dime-store pulp novel. To get your fix of back-door dealings, check out the Heritage Forests Campaign’s new print ads running in Congress Daily and Washington D.C. metro stations. The message: The Bush administration’s forest policy is pulp fiction.

Although the Bush administration has said it will uphold the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, it has worked behind closed doors with corporate special interests to gut the most popular federal rule in history. They’re deceiving the

public into thinking they want to uphold the rule -- remember that fateful May 4th pledge by Agriculture Secretary, Ann Veneman? It’s two years after the pledge, and all she and the administration have done is work to turn a good policy bad.

It’s the seedy underbelly of American politics. But like Philip Marlow or Sam Spade, the roadless rule has a shot at redemption thanks to a recent court victory and bipartisan support in Congress. And it’s not too late for the Bush administration to see the error in its ways, and support the rule as originally adopted.

With all these plot twists and character turns, this is sure to be a cliffhanger you can’t put down.
